How did Dr. Snow Contribute to the study of Geography?
Even though most of Dr. Snow's work was based around Medicine, He was the first person to make a map of cases of a disease to find the cause.A Chlorea outbreak in Soho, England attracted his attention and, when he made a map of the reported deaths, He saw that the vast majority of them occurred around a single water pump in the town, on Broad street. He made the local authorities remove the handle from the pump and the number of reported cases dropped immediately after and Dr. Snow became a hero among locals.
Why is this important to us now?
The kind of map he used then is still in use now by agencies such as the CDC when they deal with deadly diseases such as AIDS, the Flu and cancer. Snow's map allows them to find and track trends in the disease's spread and deal with the cause or figure out where it will appear next so they can be ready with medical help. The map can also be used to find patterns in geography, for example, you could make a map that marks restaurants and residential areas to see if there is any relationship between the locations.
